JOB LOCATION: Samuel Mehelona Memorial Hospital, Kapaa, Kauai, Hawaii
This position is responsible for all cooking operations in the regular and special diet kitchen, including supervising other cooks and participating in cooking activities; practicing safe and sanitary handling of food, equipment and supplies, planning of modified diets as directed by the Manager. Responsible for all baking in the department and performs other duties as assigned. Must be available all days, all shifts.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Experience and Training: Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience which demonstrated knowledge and skill to perform general quantity cooking duties. Quantity cooking is defined as experience in the daily preparation of meals in a restaurant, hospital, school, correctional facility or other large institution. Experience of this kind may be gained as a cook in a kitchen where large scale cooking operations are performed and a large number of meals are served daily.
The experience must have demonstrated knowledge of and ability to independently prepare various types of foods using various cooking methods (e.g., cooking meats, fish and poultry by various processes, such as roasting, baking, broiling and/or frying). At least one year of experience must have been comparable to the class Cook II.
Supervisory aptitude is the demonstration of aptitude or potential for the performance of supervisory duties through successful completion of regular or special assignments which involve some supervisory responsibilities or aspects; by serving as a group or team leader, previous work experience in a position that demonstrates or performs supervisory functions or in similar work in which opportunities for demonstrating supervisory capabilities exist; by completion of training courses in supervision accompanied by application of supervisory skills in work assignments; or by favorable appraisals by a supervisor indicating the possession of supervisory potential.

Knowledge of: Kitchen management; quantity cookery; the use and care of cooking utensils and equipment; kitchen safety and sanitation requirements; principles and practices of supervision; menu planning; food purchasing and storage.
Instruct and supervise others in cooking activities; estimate amounts of foods necessary to meet menu requirements; plan cooking activities to meet scheduled meal times; get along well with others; tolerate kitchen heat; perform heavy lifting, moving and carrying typical of the class.
Applicants must be physically able to perform, efficiently and effectively, the essential duties of the position which typically require the ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters, glasses permitted, and the ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, or the ability to compensate satisfactorily. Physical demands may include (with assistance) lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds and occasional pushing and pulling up to 50 pounds. Standing and walking seven (7) hours a day or more. Environmental conditions may include extreme hot, cold and temperature changes (such as walking into the walk-in freezer). Working conditions will require working with and being exposed to toxic chemicals used for cleaning. Protective equipment will be issued such as gloves, masks, goggles, and aprons.

QUALITY OF EXPERIENCE: Possession of the required amount of experience will not in itself be accepted as proof of qualification for the position. MERIT OR CIVIL SERVICE SYSTEM: You must meet the minimum qualification requirements, including education, experience, other public employment requirements for State Civil Service employment, and HHSC Standards of Fitness. PHYSICAL EXAMINATION REQUIREMENT: Offers of employment will be conditioned on the results of a complete physical examination, which includes a drug screening. CRIMINAL/BACKGROUND, CREDENTIALING CHECKS: Applicable checks will be conducted periodically and any associated costs may be borne by the applicant. If a job offer is made or employment is begun prior to completion of all applicable checks, any offer of employment or continued employment is contingent upon satisfactory return of all required checks.

If you do not submit your request within the twenty (20) days deadline, no Administrative Review will be conducted. Since the Administrative Review is a prerequisite to subsequent steps, failure to utilize this process will make you ineligible for subsequent appeals. The administrative review, formal complaint and/or appeals hearing will not necessarily postpone the recruitment process and/or rescind a selection.
