JOB LOCATION: Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital, Kapaa, Kauai, Hawaii
Provides nursing and first aid to patients brought in on emergencies; assists the physician in the examination and treatment of patients; prepares and maintains records of all emergency cases; and arranges admittance to the hospital for those who need it. Provides for preoperative and postoperative patients for outpatient surgery.
The primary function of this position is to assume the nurse manager responsibilities for the organization, management, and direction of nursing services in the Emergency Department to ensure the provision of optimal care for patients while addressing their individualized age-appropriate needs. Incumbent must be able to carry out nursing procedures as well as delegate to staff those techniques requiring a high degree of skill and current knowledge.
Position is subject to shifts, which includes work on weekends and holidays, and may be assigned to cover other nursing units as needed. This position will cover M-F 3:00pm-11:30pm
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are credited based on a 40-hour workweek.
Education Requirement: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
Experience Requirement: One and one-half years (1 1/2) of professional nursing experience, of which one year of satisfactory work experience must have been comparable to Registered Professional Nurse III in State service, where applicant independently provided nursing care to patients in a clinic, hospital or institution.
Supervisory Experience: Must have one-half (1/2) years of professional nursing experience which included: (1) planning and directing the work of others; (2) assigning and reviewing their work; (3) advising them on difficult problem areas; (4) timing and scheduling their work; and (5) training and developing employees.
Substitution: Possession of a master’s degree from an accredited college or university school of nursing may be substituted for six (6) months of required Experience.
License Required: License to practice as professional nurse in the State of Hawaii. Applicants must submit evidence of current Hawaii RN licensure (a copy of valid license) at the time of appointment.

Since the Administrative Review is a prerequisite to subsequent steps, failure to utilize this process will make you ineligible for subsequent appeals. The administrative review, formal complaint and/or appeals hearing will not necessarily postpone the recruitment process and/or rescind a selection. If you do not agree with the Administrative Review, you may file a Formal Complaint and then, if you are still not satisfied, you can appeal to the HHSC Merit Appeals Board.
