FUNCTION:
This is a regional position in the Education Department within HHSC Kauai Region, which includes Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH), Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH), and several ambulatory clinics. Kauai Region is part of Hawaii Health Systems Corporation. This position is primarily located at KVMH, but will require travel between facilities as needed.
The Education Department develops and initiates orientation and EMR programs for new nursing personnel. Coordinates, develops, and implements educational programs for orientation, on-the-job training, and continuing education for all hospital personnel.
The primary function of this position is to direct the design, planning, and implementation of in-service and ongoing competency training programs for professional and technical staff ensuring that the training programs meet federal, state, and regulating bodies’ standards or regulations. Presents and/or coordinates in-service and ongoing competency training programs for patient care staff and other staff relating to patient care needs. Responsible for the orientation/monitoring of all new staff. Provides initial EMR navigation training as part of the employee orientation program.
Position may be subject to shifts when off-shift education is needed. Position reports to the Regional Chief Nurse Executive.
Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience are credited based on a 40-hour workweek.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Master’s Degree from an accredited school of nursing is preferred.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: One and one-half (1 1/2) years of professional nursing experience.
SUPERVISORY EXPERIENCE: One-half (1/2) year of professional nursing experience which included: (1) planning and directing the work of others; (2) assigning and reviewing their work; (3) advising them on difficult problem areas; (4) timing and scheduling their work; and (5) training and developing employees.
SELECT CERTIFICATION:
- Of the required one and one-half (1 ½) years of professional nursing experience, one and one-half (1 ½) years of professional nursing experience working in an education department developing training and education programs and training employees on the use of electronic medical records (EMR) system is required. The required experience must have been gained within the past two (2) years.
CERTIFICATION: Applicants are required to be a certified instructor in at least two of the following upon hire:
Basic Life Support (BLS), Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS), Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI), Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition, and Stabilization (PEARS), Fetal Monitoring, or Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).
LICENSE REQUIREMENT: License to practice as a professional nurse in the State of Hawaii. Applicants must submit evidence of current Hawaii RN licensure (a copy of valid license) at the time of appointment.

MERIT OR CIVIL SERVICE SYSTEM: You must meet the minimum qualification requirements, including education, experience, other public employment requirements for State Civil Service employment, and HHSC Standards of Fitness. PHYSICAL EXAMINATION REQUIREMENT: Offers of employment will be conditioned on the results of a complete physical examination, which includes a drug screening. The cost for all physical examinations, except the cost for the drug screening, shall be borne by the applicant and not the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation. The Hawaii Health Systems Corporation shall bear the cost of the drug screening.
CRIMINAL/BACKGROUND, CREDENTIALING CHECKS: Applicable checks will be conducted periodically and any associated costs may be borne by the applicant. If you do not submit your request within the twenty (20) days deadline, no Administrative Review will be conducted. Since the Administrative Review is a prerequisite to subsequent steps, failure to utilize this process will make you ineligible for subsequent appeals. The administrative review, formal complaint and/or appeals hearing will not necessarily postpone the recruitment process and/or rescind a selection. If you do not agree with the Administrative Review, you may file a Formal Complaint and then, if you are still not satisfied, you can appeal to the HHSC Merit Appeals Board.
